The 1919 Boston Police Strike Project: Researching the Men Behind the Strike with Margaret Sullivan
On September 9, 1919, more than 1100 Boston police officers went on strike in hopes of gaining long promised improvements in wages and working conditions. None of the strikers worked as Boston police officers again.
Relying on volunteer genealogists, including TIARA members, the 1919 Boston Police Strike Project used genealogical records to document the lives of the police officers involved in this highly influential labor strike. For the September 2019 centennial the project launched the website ROLL CALL with a biographical encyclopedia. This encyclopedia documents each of the officers for the benefit of researchers, historians, students, and others, including family members of the strikers. The project is run by UMass Boston’s Healey Library and the Boston Police Archives.
Join long time TIARA member Margaret R. Sullivan, Records Manager and Archivist at the Boston Police Department, to learn more about this collaborative project.
