Boston College was founded in 1863 as a school for the immigrant population, largely Irish, that was flooding into Boston. Education of the sons (not yet the daughters) of immigrants was seen as a means for their social and economic advancement over the course of generations. This talk will review the long history of BC and its evolution from a small local college to a university of national and even international reputation.
