December 2021 Meeting

December 10 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm

Genealogy Resources at the Archdiocese of Boston

Join us for a presentation by Thomas Lester, Director of the Archive & Library at the Archdiocese of Boston, during which he will discuss the role of the Archive Department, records in its collection that are most valuable to genealogists, and how to access them. The presentation will be a focus on Catholic sacramental and cemetery records, including a tutorial on how to access those which have been digitized and made available online. Additionally, there will be a live demonstration of two recently developed tools, a parish boundary map and cemetery maps. An overview of other collections of interest will include records from children’s homes, such as the Home for Destitute Catholic Children, and The Pilot Boston Catholic newspaper, among others. The presentation will conclude with a look at upcoming projects and a Q&A.

Presented by Thomas Lester:

Thomas Lester is the Director of the Archive & Library at the Archdiocese of Boston, responsible for overseeing the research library, archive and records management programs for archdiocesan offices, parishes, and schools. Several years ago, he initiated a partnership with the New England Historic Genealogical Society to digitize parish sacramental records and make them available on AmericanAncestors.org, a project which has since expanded to include Catholic cemetery records. He is also the author of Catholic Boston (2018), has authored over 120 articles in The Pilot, the Boston Catholic newspaper, and contributed to publications such as American Ancestors Magazine, Religion News Service and the Boston Globe.
